Tribute

Carl Wilbourn Collins, 97, of Dripping Springs, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. Carl was born on October 10, 1923 in Valliant, Oklahoma to parents Ed Collins and Rena Campbell Collins. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army Air Corps /Air Force. Carl retired after working for 39 ½ years for Exxon Mobil Refinery in Baytown, Texas.

He was a former member of Lakewood Church of Christ and a current member of Dripping Springs Church of Christ. He was a Master Mason of Goose Creek Lodge 1192, Baytown Shrine Club, Arabia Temple of Houston, and Baytown Kiwanis. He was previously an active member of Lakewood Civic Association and neighborhood watch program, and delivered lunch to shut-ins.

Carl was married to Jean Hill Collins for 59 years. Carl and Jean enjoyed square dancing with Bayshore Wagon Wheels. Carl had a passion for softball, dancing, and exercising. He was known for his firm handshakes and sweet smiles.

He was an active participant and President of Baytown Senior Softball and played in five World Series softball tournaments. Carl played thirty years in Baytown, Pasadena and Houston leagues. In 2012 he was inducted to the Texas Senior Softball Hall of Fame.

Poppy was very involved with his great-grandchildren. He would attend his great-grandson’s baseball and football games, and his great-granddaughter’s livestock shows and choir concerts.

Carl enjoyed his final years in Dripping Springs with his grandchildren. He attended Dripping Springs Senior Center, YMCA and Dripping Springs Church of Christ where he made many close friends.

Poppy went to be with the Lord peacefully surrounded by his family at home. He will be greatly missed and always remembered.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean Hill Collins; parents, Ed and Rena Collins; and sister, Ruby Collins.

Carl is survived by his son, Carl Collins Jr. and wife Terry of Centerville, Texas; grandson, Kent Collins and wife Annika of Dripping Springs, Texas; great-grandchildren, Bailey and Barrett Collins of Drippings, Springs, Texas; and a host of extended family and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on Monday, June 7, 2021 at Sterling White Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at Sterling White Funeral Home. Interment will be in Sterling White Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Arms of Hope Medina Campus (21300 State Hwy. 16 North Medina, Texas 78055) or Foster’s Home for Children (1779 N. Graham St., Stephenville, Texas 76401).
